A New Major Step in Diabetes Care with New Clinical Guidelines

On 10 October 2024, a workshop with healthcare professionals in Kosovo focused on the new Clinical Guidelines and Protocols (CPGs) tailored to the management of diabetes mellitus. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Kosovo Hospital and Clinical Services, supported by the IHS project, aims to standardize care by providing healthcare providers at all levels with essential tools for effective and consistent diabetes treatment.

Dr. Merita Emini Sadiku, one of the key professionals in the initiative, underscored the importance of this collaborative effort, noting, “The development of clinical guidelines and protocols for diabetes has been a joint effort. Our goal has been to align our practices with international standards, equipping healthcare providers in Kosovo with the tools to deliver the most effective care. This is a significant step toward improving long-term health outcomes for those with diabetes.”

The workshop emphasized the crucial role of healthcare managers at all levels—primary, secondary, and tertiary—in implementing new Clinical Guidelines and Protocols (CGPs) for diabetes care, ensuring that these protocols are well-understood and effectively applied across institutions. Internal auditors and quality coordinators play a key role by conducting regular evaluations to ensure compliance, identify areas for improvement, and maintain consistent standards across facilities. Additionally, the workshop highlighted the importance of training and capacity-building through structured sessions and ongoing education to keep healthcare providers updated on best practices in diabetes management.

Niman Bardhi from Kosovo’s Ministry of Health remarked, “Today’s workshop on diabetes clinical guidelines marks a crucial step in our commitment to enhancing healthcare. By standardizing our approach to diabetes care, we ensure all patients receive consistent, quality treatment, reflecting our dedication to better health outcomes and ongoing support for healthcare professionals nationwide.”
