Discussing Safer Care with Management of Kosovo Hospital and University Clinical Service

On 26 June 2025, the IHS project organized a high-level meeting between the Kosovo Hospital and University Clinical Service (KHUCS) with Professor Oliver Groene, Chief Scientific Officer at OptiMedis. The session focused on advancing national efforts to embed patient safety at the heart of healthcare delivery.

Prof. Groene presented the SAFEST project and its self-evaluation methodology, emphasizing the importance of system-level interventions: from hand hygiene protocols to the implementation of complex safety checklists. “Errors are not human but systemic, and systems must be redesigned to prevent harm,” was a key message of the discussion.

The KHUCSC management was guided through a range of evidence-based practices aimed at improving safety along the surgical care pathway. The meeting also explored how safety strategies can be integrated into the Health Promoting Hospitals (HPH) framework, aligning with international best practices.
