Community Members Discuss Diabetes Concerns in Peja
A diverse group of community representatives, healthcare professionals, and public officials from Peja gathered for a roundtable discussion on 26 September 2024. The roundtable focused on addressing the unique challenges under-represented communities face in accessing healthcare for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). Organized by the Integrated Health Services (IHS) project in collaboration with the Association of Diabetic Patients of Peja (ASD), the event emphasized the importance of equitable healthcare access and tailored care for all.
Dr. Besnik Ibraj, General Hospital of Peja, said the hospital “recognizes that members of under-represented communities face specific barriers that can hinder access to necessary care and impact health outcomes. Strengthening collaboration with these communities is essential to ensuring that health information and education reach every citizen in Peja.”
“Our mission is to work with all healthcare stakeholders, from providers to each patient, to support local institutions in strengthening a system where every individual has access to quality healthcare,” said Dr. Ilir Mecini, Deputy Team Leader, IHS project.
Idriz Ethemi, founder of the Association of Diabetic Patients in Peja encouraged an open discussion between patients and other participants.
Roundtable participants discussed about barriers and challenges that communities face while accessing essential healthcare services, and brainstormed recommendations to promote inclusivity and equity in NCD care. These recommendations will be shared with other civil society organizations, public institutions, and media to foster broader awareness and support for these critical issues.
